K-12 P.E. Drill Thrill

Welcome  to Thursday’s P.E. Drill Thrill! This week we show diagrams and instructions for 2 timed SandBell relay games, great for K-5 physical education classes.

For these games:

  • Set-Up: Mark the location of each station with a cone or other object. Put SandBells each station; use SandBell weights appropriate for the age and abilities of the students in the relay.
  • You need a timer or watch with second hand. The kids spend 30 seconds at each station. The relay starts when the timer does.

Hop, Skip and Jump from the Lava!

The kids spend 30 seconds at each station. When the timer starts, the kids  begin the activity. When the timer goes off, the kids still in the “lava” must stop and do 10 jumping jacks. Kids at their station cone when the timer goes off are “safe” and don’t have to do jumping jacks.

Station 1- Hop:  Use two, 4 lb. SandBells at this station. Grab a SandBell in each hand and see how many hops it takes to reach the wall, tag it, and then hop back to the station cone. Increase the momentum of each hop by swinging your arms and hands back and forth with each hop.

Station 2-Skip: Use two, 4 lb. SandBells at this station. Grab a SandBell in each hand, skip to the wall, tag the wall, then skip back to the station cone. Coaches, when you are showing how to do this exercise, raise your knees up high when skipping to show good form and make the skips more challenging.

Station 3-Jump: Use one, 6 lb. SandBell at this station, and three disks (or other flat objects) on the floor spaced equal distance between the station cone and the finishing wall. Hold a SandBell with both hands and jump from the cone to the first disk, slam the SandBell to the ground, pick up the SandBell and jump to the next disk. To do a proper slam, raise the SandBell overhead with both hands in full extension, with all your force slam the SandBell to the ground and then squat to pick up the SandBell.

SandBell SLAM Relay

Set-Up: Mark the location of each station with a cone or other object. Also, set three disks (or other flat objects) on the floor equally spaced from the cone to the wall.

This is a timed relay: kids spend 30 seconds at each station. At the start of the timer kids begin the activity. When the timer goes off, kids that are still in the “lava” must stop and do 10 jumping jacks. If kids are at their station cone when the timer goes off then they are safe and don’t do jumping jacks.

Station 1- Two Hand Slam: Use 2, 4 lb. SandBells at this station. With one SandBell in each hand, jump to the first disk, raise both hands overhead and slam the SandBells to the floor. Pick up the SandBells and jump to the next disk and repeat. Count the number of times kids get back and forth in 30 seconds.

Station 2- Squat Jump Slam: Use one, 6 lb. SandBell at this station. Grab the SandBell with both hands, jump to the first disk, slam the SandBell onto the ground, squat and jump with both feet onto the SandBell and then jump back off. Pick up the SandBell and jump to the next disk and repeat. Count the number of times kids get back and forth in 30 seconds.

Station 3- Rainbow Slams: Use one, 6 lb. SandBell at this station. Grab the SandBell with both hands and jump to the first disk. Slam the SandBell to the ground next to your right foot, pick up SandBell and in a rainbow motion swing and slam the SandBell onto the ground next to your left foot. Pick up the SandBell and jump to the next disk and repeat. Count the number of times kids get back and forth in 30 seconds.

Station 4- Granny Toss Slam: Use one, 6 lb. SandBell at this station. Grab the SandBell and jump to the first disk. Stand with feet wider than the shoulders while holding the SandBell with both hands below the knees. Granny toss the SandBell just above head height, when the SandBell is at head height reach up, grab the SandBell and slam to the ground. Pick up the SandBell and jump to the next disk and repeat. Count the number of times kids get back and forth in 30 seconds.
