Best Home Gym Benefit = The Solution to Your Resolution

The best home gym benefit, bar none, is the proximity of your gym to your home. The gym is in your house (or apartment).

Why is this so critical? It all comes down to one thing, and one thing only- habit formation.

Every trainer worth the money will tell you that your success at the gym depends on forming a new habit. If they tell you otherwise, they’re not a good trainer.

So, take one guess what you have to do if you’re one of the tens of thousands of Americans with a fitness focused New Year’s resolution.

Yeah that’s right.

Form a new habit.

The Fitness Industry’s (in)Famous Time of Year

January and February always represent a tumultuous time for the fitness industry.

On one hand, this time of year is notorious for people not sticking to their convictions.

On the other, most gyms and businesses know this well, and coordinate their business practices to take full advantage of contract sign ups.

Let’s take a look at some statistics.

-12% of new gym memberships come in January come by percentage, but it actually represents about a 33-50% increase in volume. The second week of January is almost always the busiest of the year.

-80% of the New Years Resolutions crowd drops off by the second week of February. Meaning only 20% remain, and the rate of sign-ups tapers off by February (almost all of that initial spike, save for maybe 1-2% of total volume for the year.)

-Gyms typically sell memberships with the expectation that a mere 18% of people will actually use them. Meaning there is a 1/5 chance you’ll use yours consistently for longer than a month.

That was the good news.

The Bad News

Figuratively falling off that treadmill, is easier than you think. Take a look at these dismal numbers:

-According to a 2012 study, 80% of gym members that join in January quit within 5 months

-4% of New Year’s resolutioners quit by the end of January

-14% of New Year’s resolutioners quit by the end of February

Last, but not least, let’s take a quick look at “fall off the wagon day.” This day is defined as “that day is when an uptick in weekly visits to fast food restaurants meets a drop in weekly visits to the gym.” Fall off the wagon day has happened on February 9 in years past, statistically correlating with the second Saturday in February.

But how often do you miss going to the gym, if the gym is in your house?

Best Home Gym Benefit = Proximity

66. That is the magic number and the goal you should strive for. What is it?

66 is the number of days it takes to form a habit. Since your training success depends on consistency, forming a regular gym going habit is beyond crucial.

What’s the number one enemy threatening your regular attendance at the gym?

Distance.

Common sense will tell anyone that the closer you are to your gym, the odds of you making it a routine and forming a new habit, go way up.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the average gym member travels 4 miles to the gym. The article continues, stating:

“Longer commutes are associated with fewer visits, the data found. People who go to the gym once a month travel a median distance of 5.1 miles. Those who go five or more times a month travel 3.7 miles.”

Thus, proximity equals consistency. Now, imagine the odds of your success when you have easily formed a habit and have high consistency.

You’re not going to fail yourself. Proximity being the best home gym benefit, gives you the solution to your resolution.

Stay True to Your Self

If you are absolutely determined to get yourself into shape and stay in shape, with no room for error or falling off the wagon, then setting up a home gym is without a doubt, the best way to go.

You may have a couple of reservations however; cost and space.

When you hear “home gym” or “garage gym” you might be stricken with financial terror with an avalanche of dollar signs tumbling through your head.

That’s because when many people think of a “home gym” they might be picturing something like this:

While this is a beautiful and impressive set up, this is unnecessary for beginners. All you need is a small space, a corner of a garage or maybe a spare bedroom that can double, or triple, as a home office and training space.

In terms of equipment, you don’t need a lot. It would be great if you have enough space for a small squat rack and bench. If not, don’t worry about it.

You can get by with a set up that simply relies on a plyo box, paralettes, and a sandbag trainer or some sandbells.

Arguably, you don’t even need that much. As long as you have free space to do some plyometric movements, you can train quite effectively with only a weight vest.

You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars out of the gate to train successfully. Remember, forming a habit and a routine is what will make you, not the money you spend.

In the end, the amount of space you’ll need will be dictated by your goals, which in turn, determines the type of gear you’ll be using.

If you’re not needing to do barbell work, or use a squat rack, you’ll need considerably less space.
