In the third week of the Hyper Training Lab, Diane continues to focus her four-week series on circuit training based on body movements, not just body parts. We are bumping up the intensity this week, so see if you can keep up!

As a reminder the four categories of movement in the circuit are:

Level Changes – lower body dominant movements, dropping and raising the center of mass

Push/Pull – upper body dominant movements

Rotary Stability/Rotation – focusing on core strength

Locomotion and Standing- athletic movements that increase coordinative skill

This third circuit is for total body conditioning and increasing the demands of the energy systems. The details, so you can do your own circuit at home or in your facility are as follows:

Always begin with a proper dynamic warm-up

For conditioning, perform 45 to 60 seconds of work followed by 15 seconds of rest in between each station

Four-exercise circuit

Three to four rounds or circuits with 60-90 seconds of rest in between rounds for the entire workout

And finally, what you’ve been waiting for…the exercise list:

Clean

Explosive variation based on Olympic lift.

First Progression: One SteelBell/SandBell

Second Progression: 2 SteelBells/SandBells to create dynamic challenge.

Strong,neutral wrist position.

Grip into SteelBell

Movement generated from the strength of the hips

SteelBell Flips with Push Ups

Great for Shoulder stability.

Shift weight back and forth on single arm.

Dynamic movementfor upper body and great challenge for core strength

First Progression: SteelBell Flips

Second Progression: SteelBell Flips and Push Ups

Star Pattern

Athletic position with braced core

Covering many movements in one pattern with star pattern

Involves great shoulder to opposite hip rotational patterns

Lateral Shuffle with Lateral Lunge

Frontal plane movement.

Lateral shuffle over SandBell, immediately to lateral lunge

Lateral lunge emphasizes strength needed for changes of direction.

Push off outside foot.

Higher in metabolic demand than a balance movement for increasing overall work load of circuit

First Progression: Only body weight, no SandBell

Second Progression: Perform with resistance of SandBell

As always, we’d love to hear your feedback, so let us know how this circuit was for you!

I did not see Harry Potter yesterday and I will not see it today. In fact, I won’t see it this weekend. I may not even see it this month.

Don’t get me wrong, I will see it, but the trouble is three-fold:

1. I don’t want to sit amongst the throngs of die-hards that will attend this weekend.

2. I didn’t see the last one (part one to this part two). I know – horror of horrors! But I hate the suspense! I couldn’t bear seeing the first half and then having to wait for the second. So, first I have to watch that one. In fact, while I’m at it, I think I need to watch all of them again in a row so I remember the flow of the story…

3. I don’t want to slip into the deep depression feared for many Muggles according to this article:

Grief counseling for Muggles mourning final ‘Harry Potter’ film

But have no fear!! Hyper Wear has a solution!

Do you know what’s great for dealing with depression and grief?

Exercise! That’s right! It gets the endorphins flowing that give you happy feelings and it helps you look great so that when you look in the mirror you love what you see and when you get the one-eyebrow-raised-half-smile-with-the-head-nod at the gym, you know it was well-deserved.

We have a whole channel on You Tube with tons of videos with ideas for exercises to do!

So, for all you sad Muggles out there mourning the end of an era, chin up! We’ve got just the thing!

It’s that time of year again, the sun is cooking the earth like a Thanksgiving turkey, gas seems to be evaporating from our engines and while sitting on the deck at Hula Hut, I suddenly have the urge to cannonball into Lake Austin. But hey, with the 100-degree heat comes all the fun summer 5K’s, 10K’s, marathons and half-marathons. So whether you’re training for a race, or trying to get in shape for summer, studies show that two strength-training sessions per week can improve your endurance.

“A strong body improves your biomechanics, which enables you to train harder and more effectively without increased injury or risk,” says Matt Dixon, M. Sc., a San Francisco running coach. It makes sense that, if you want to train harder, your muscles are going to have to be strong enough to support the extra miles you’ll be pounding on the pavement. Another perk of strength training is the injuries you’ll avoid as your miles add up. Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, a Men’s Health Fitness Advisor and author of Turbulence Training for Fat Loss, conducted his own informal experiment of strength-training’s impact and concluded, “the more strength and muscle you have, the less likely you are to get chronic overuse injury.” He went on to say that being thinner may allow runners to attack hills faster, but will also leave them prone to more injuries.

What’s the safest, most effective and definitely most fun way to incorporate strength training workouts? By using our SandBell<ins datetime="2011-05-26T14:24" cite="mailto:Suzi%20Raines"> </ins>sandbags, SteelBell<ins datetime="2011-05-26T14:25" cite="mailto:Suzi%20Raines"> </ins>weights and Hyper Vest PRO weight vest, OF COURSE! The Hyper Wear blog archive contains hundreds of tips, videos and workout plans, and is a great resource to come up with your own muscle-building routines. Check out the video below for some SandBell exercises, take a look at previous blogs, or search Hyper Wear on YouTube for even more videos and demonstrations!

Regardless of the exercises you choose to do, strength training is an essential workout component that should not be overlooked, especially for runners. So pick up a SandBell and let those muscles feel the burn!

Need a quick workout mid-week that incorporates Hyper Wear’s versatile products? Try the following mini-workout wearing your Hyper Vest PRO and use whatever size SandBells you prefer.

5 min. warm up (jumping jacks or walking in place work well)

Throw on your Hyper Vest PRO and let’s get started!

1 min. each of the following (count reps)

1. Push Up & Row – Get into push up position with a SandBell on the floor between hands. Perform a push up, allowing your chest to touch the SandBell before pushing back up. At the top of the push up, grip the SandBell with one hand and twist your body as you lift the SandBell into the sky (your body will make a T position at the end of the movement). Lower the SandBell back to start and repeat, using the other arm for the row.

2. Split Stance w/ Back Foot on Box Squats – It’s a mouthful! Using a plyobox or other stable raised surface, get into a split stance with the toes of your back foot up on the box. Holding a SandBell at the chest, on the back, or out in front of you with straight arms, squat and return to standing. Switch legs for next round.

3. Standing Twists, Straight Arms – Hold your SandBell with both hands at chest level. Extend arms straight out in front of you. Holding your core tight, keep your arms straight and hands at chest level, twist right to left.

4. SandBell Reach – Split stance, holding a SandBell in the hand opposite to the front leg. Bend forward, stretching the SandBell as far out in front of you as you can go without extending the front knee past the front foot. In one smooth motion, bring the SandBell back to your chest and then reach back behind you with it, as far as you can. Straight line with the body; hips pushing forward; front toes raise off the ground. Switch to other side for next round.

5. Slow Motion Slams – A new favorite! Same motion as slams, but in slow motion! Begin with SandBell overhead and then lower it slowly to the floor, arms stay relatively straight, as you squat all the way down to lightly touch it to the floor. Slowly return to standing with SandBell overhead. This one is not about speed, but about how slow you can go, so the lower number of reps in a minute, the better!

Repeat whole series and try to beat your number of reps from the first round

5 min. cool down

The Hyper Wear Staff was privileged to attend the premiere of Health Needs a Hero on Sunday, May 22nd at the Long Center here in Austin.

Health Needs a Hero is a powerful and inspirational documentary detailing the epidemic of our childhood health issues, told through the hearts of children and key stakeholders. And it is fantastic. Take a look as Jen Olson, the film’s director, tells a little more about the project.

In conjunction with the documentary, Ms. Olson started the PE3 foundation which incorporates mind, body, and spirit. We would love to work with Jen in this worthy cause since SandBells are such an easy and natural fit for P.E. students.

From the PE3 website:

According to the Texas Health Institute (THI), one in three (35%) of Texas children – more than double the national average – are considered to be overweight or obese. Texas ranks 6th highest in the nation for obesity in 10 – 17 year olds.

Overweight children at 12 have a 75% likelihood of being overweight adults, in danger of serious medical issues. For the first time in 120 years, the life expectancy of Americans decreased in 2008.

The Texas Department of State Health Services estimates that if nothing is done, the number of overweight or obese adult Texans will continue to increase, growing from 10 million (63%) today to 20 million (75%) by 2040. In Texas, as in the US, obesity occurs at a much higher rate for African-Americans and Latinos than for Anglos; and within these populations, persons of low socio-economic status appear to be particularly affected.

We look forward to more interactions with Ms. Olson and PE3 and are proud to be on the front lines with such mighty warriors in the battle against childhood obesity.

Good Monday Morning!

This week I’m taking a different approach to the traditional push-up. I can’t think of another exercise that our young children despise more than the push-up, and why wouldn’t they? They’re in such a new developmental stage where their bodies are growing, their head is usually bigger proportionately than the rest of their body, and there we are, the teacher making them get on the ground and crank out push-ups over and over again with each passing day.

Why not create a game out of it? Try the Plank Position Dot Toss game in this video, and bonus points go out to everyone out there that has SandBells to use instead of dots! This game doesn’t have to be the end-all-be-all…create ways to integrate the students or athletes to work together, encourage each other, and work out their minds all at the same time!

Wednesday, May 18th, Hyper Wear conducted its first of many shoots for DVD content. It was an amazing day! There are so many people to thank, it’s hard to know where to begin… So, in no particular order, let me give a few shout-outs to the folks that made this amazing day happen!

Our athletes / trainers for the shoot included Diane Vives, Hyper Wear’s Director of Training; Daryell Harmon, Avery Moore, and Joe Lopez of Police Training Group out of Dallas, TX; and Sayif Saud of Octagon Fitness, also out of Dallas, TX. It was truly humbling to be in a room with so many amazing athletes from such varied backgrounds, but all with the desire to present SandBells and SteelBells to the combat athlete world.

Behind the cameras were Dennis Weaver and Timothy Chew. Sound was run by John McDaniel (who had a lot of ambient noise to deal with from the ice machine in the warehouse behind us to the birds pecking on the roof to the police sirens at various points to large trucks rumbling by). And Nikita Lance graced us with her wonderful slate abilities!

Cosmo, Diane, and Dennis put the whole shoot together and between the three of them did an amazing job of setting up shots, coaching the trainers for what would look best on camera, and handling wrenches that got thrown in at the last minute.

And there was of course the wonderful folks at H.E.A.T. Bootcamp who were so kind and accommodating to let us use their space! Founder and creator, Cody Butler, met with some of our crew to show them around the space and help figure out logistics. On Wednesday, he was around all day, always checking on us to make sure we had what we needed. They even moved their sessions outside so we could have full use of the facility. And Marshall Ryan Priest let us in to set up Tuesday evening and showed us the ropes.

Our fabulous interns, Jordan Pratt and Carol Martins, helped me do any odd jobs that needed doing. Dirk Buikema stopped by with Video Release Forms and Joe Atocha and Ben Buikema held down the fort back here at the office. And I shouldn’t leave out Denver Fredenburg who gave a big thumbs up to the whole deal!! I even want to thank the kind and helpful folks at Rudy’s and Subway who took our food orders and carried the big boxes to the car for me (even when I was parked a block away!).

It was a lot of work, but we all agreed that it was well worth it! We can’t wait to get the DVD done and out there – it’s gonna rock the Combat Athlete’s world!

1. Scoop Toss – Grip SandBell with two hands, take a wide stance, hang SandBell low between legs. Swing SandBell up and out and release as your knees and back straighten (you are going for distance on the toss). Run to the SandBell you just tossed, pick it up and toss it back in the other direction.

2. Side Lunges – Holding a challenging weight of SandBell on one shoulder, begin with feet about hip distance apart. Step right leg out far to the side, pointing toes at a 45 degree angle. Keep the left foot toes all pointing straight forward. Left leg will straighten and right knee will bend to about 90 degrees (don’t let knee extend past toes on right foot). Push off of right foot to return to standing and lunge in the other direction. Switch which shoulder the SandBell is on after two lunges on each side (and continue lunging and switching for the entire minute).

3. Standing Twists – Hold your SandBell with both hands at chest level. Elbows pointing out (not by your sides). Holding your core tight, twist right to left.

4. Crab walk – Remember this one from PE class? Sit on your bottom, then put your feet and hands down onto the ground. Lift bottom off the ground so that you can walk around on hands and feet. Two options with SandBells: Place a SandBell on your stomach and keep your core tight as you crabwalk around OR Put the SandBell in front of your feet and kick it as you walk along, moving it forward by turning it over slowly with one foot then the other.

Repeat whole series and try to beat your number of reps from the first round

5 min. cool down

Austin ISD has SandBells in every Physical Education classroom in the district, which is a wonderful beginning, but we realize just owning the product is not enough. We take every opportunity we are given to go to schools to talk with teachers and kids about fitness. We participate in Wellness Days, present new ideas to teachers at inservice days, and show kids how much fun exercising can be.

It is no easy task so we want to commend all of you hard working P.E. administrators and teachers who are so passionate about physical fitness for yourself and the children whose lives you influence every day. We know a lot of the Texas P.E. administrators and teachers personally and we know that they are working hard to turn things around. Thank you for the dedication and perseverance. Let us know how we can help!

Are you a parent of a child in P.E.? When was the last time you thanked your child’s P.E. teacher? What can you perhaps do to help further instill the message of health in your children?

Are you a P.E. teacher? Do you have SandBells in your classroom? If so, what are your kids’ favorite activities with SandBells? If not, why not?!

It’s summertime and for most of us, that means it’s time to get outside and PLAY! So to celebrate this wonderful weather, I’m putting a different spin on some traditional exercises and movement patterns to help remind us all to allow room for play to be a part of our training sessions.

Whether you’re a strength coach, personal trainer, bootcamp instructor, physical education instructor, or just a fitness enthusiast, this video series is for you. No matter the athlete or student, there is always room for play (or there should be). You would be surprised at the reaction of your athletes when you allow for an activity or a game instead of the traditional lifts, presses, and throws. I would be willing to bet that the relationship between athlete and coach/instructor would greatly improve if there was an involvement of play in the workout program from time to time.

Hyper Wear’s products allow for safe, effective, play-based fitness and can be used for serious training, as well as serious fun. The SandBells and SteelBells allow for resistance training, while the Hyper Vest PRO takes any activity, exercise, or game to a higher level with added resistance in a safe manner.

Bottom line: Never forget to have FUN with your training!!

In the June / July 2011 issue that is on stands now, there is an article about Major League Baseball’s Joey Votto. The article is all about his preseason training , complete with some notes on the actual workout he does at IMG Baseball Academy under the direction of trainer, Corey Stenstrup.

He just happens to use Hyper Wear’s SandBells! Take a look at this awesome full-body, SandBell slam:

We got invited to a nearby Elementary School to take part in their Wellness Day last Friday, May 6th. We are always honored to be part of the efforts of schools to educate their kids about living a healthy life!

Great Oaks Elementary in Round Rock, TX, did such an excellent job of organizing their wonderful Wellness Day! We welcomed seven classes of about 20-25 fifth graders to the gym for blocks of 20 minutes. We played two highly intense and highly fun race-against-the-clock games that the kids absolutely LOVED!

Who would have thought exercising could be so fun? But shhh…don’t tell the kids they were exercising – they just thought they were playing!

These kids use the SandBells in their Physical Education classes, but had never gotten to use a 50-pounder. They entered the gym with wide-eyed wonder to see such a large SandBell in the middle of the room! One of the games required the teams of 5 or 6 kids to work together to get their 50-pounder from the center of the gym to their team’s corner. It’s amazing to watch how much fun they have lifting something heavy!

So, thank you again, Great Oaks, for the great day! Keep doing what you are doing to fight the battle against childhood obesity – we’re proud to be on the front lines with you!

Need a quick workout mid-week that incorporates Hyper Wear’s versatile products? Try the following mini-workout wearing your Hyper Vest PRO and use whatever size SandBells you prefer.

5 min. warm up (jumping jacks or walking in place work well)

1 min. each of the following (count reps)

1. SandBell Kettlebell Double Arm Swings – Stand with feet wider than hip-distance apart. Get a good grip on the SandBell (grip into the sand, not just the rim), using both hands. Bending at the hips, swing the SandBell between legs and then forward until level with the ground. Change directions to swing the SandBell back down between the legs.

2. Sumo walk – Set up two SandBells on the ground (as cones) about 20 feet apart. Pick up two other SandBells to use as your weights. Get into squat position and keeping the knees bent in squat position, side step from one cone to the other. While you are moving with your legs, do shoulder presses with your arms, holding the SandBells.

3. Knee Drives – Hold a SandBell in front of you with both hands, arms bent at 90 degree angles. Lift your right knee, driving it into the SandBell and quickly returning it to the ground. Repeat with the left knee. You will feel like you are marching with high knees, driving the knees into the SandBell and keeping the SandBell as still as possible.

4. Quick feet SandBell flutter kicks – You will need a partner for this one… One person lays on their back, knees up bent at a 90-degree angle. Partner stands near the feet with the SandBell held near the partners feet. Partner kicks in small, flutter-kick movements, aiming to hit the SandBell with the laces of the shoes. This is more tiring than it sounds, so we recommend doing this for 30 seconds then flipping to your stomach for the last 30 seconds. Now, your partner is in the same position, but you are kicking the SandBells with your heels.

5. Floor scrubs – You will need a slick floor for this one. Kneeling next to the floor, take a SandBell in each hand and keeping the core tight, lean forward and “scrub” the floor with your SandBells. You can move your hands just back and forth or side to side or push them out and do a push up. Just get creative and have some fun with it!

Repeat whole series and try to beat your number of reps from the first round

5 min. cool down

Good Monday Morning!

The final week of the Pick 3 Series is upon us. It’s time to work some conditioning with my favorite tools in the toolbox: the SteelBell from Hyper Wear and the Loadable Sledgehammer from Stronger Grip. Equal movement patterns, equal results, two times the fun!!

With proper instruction, the sledgehammer can be utilized for fantastic conditioning and power development. Make sure the focus is on the technique and the speed of the movement. Be sure to never overload your athlete with something they can’t handle.

The SteelBell is safe to slam on all surfaces; however, be careful to avoid any sharp surfaces with rocks or debris. Both movements compliment each other with the SteelBell being more appropriate for younger and inexperienced athletes before using the sledgehammer.

Check it out!

But that’s just on the product testing side! You’ve seen him in almost every single one of the 100+ Monday Morning Muscles we’ve put out over the last couple of years. You’ve met him at tradeshows and seen him do awesome presentations ranging from the basics of the SandBell to its supreme level of safety. He’s posed for pictures. He’s given up weekends. He’s created some truly unique and dynamic workouts using only SandBells.

Bill recently moved with his lovely fiancee, Lauren Sparrow, to Virginia Beach, VA, where they will be wed this June. He has continued to produce the Monday Morning Muscle and helps at tradeshows when possible. In addition to planning a wedding, he just remodeled and opened his own workout facility – Meyer Fitness. Yes, he really does have that much energy!!

We would not be where we are today if it were not for the hard work, dedication, and support of Bill Meyer. We look forward to many more years of working with this amazing trainer and incredible human being!! If you are ever in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, drop in for a workout. Tell him Hyper Wear sent you!

> SandBell Kettlebell Single Arm Swings – Stand with feet wider than hip-distance apart. Get a good grip on the SandBell (grip into the sand, not just the rim). Bending at the hips, swing the SandBell between legs and then forward until level with the ground. Get a good momentum / motion going. Then at the top of the swing, release the SandBell and catch it with the other hand, continuing the motion.

> Butt Burners – Balance on one foot, holding a SandBell in the opposite hand. Bend at the hips and lower the SandBell down to to the foot on the ground. Keep your back flat and extend the back leg straight out behind you. Return to standing and repeat. Stay on the same leg for the entire minute.

> X chops (think Core) – Gripping a SandBell with both hands, hold it at your left hip. “Rip” the SandBell across the body to the right shoulder then slowly lower to the right hip and “rip” it to the left shoulder. Continue making this X motion and keep the core tight.

> Toe Taps – Place the SandBell on the ground. Tap your right toes then your left toes on it, quickly switching between feet with a hopping movement.

> Mountain Climbers – You’ll need a slick floor for this move. Get two SandBells of equal size and place them on the slick floor. Turn over into push up position and plant your toes into the center of each of the SandBells. Perform a Mountain Climber, moving your left foot, then your right foot forward and back.

Repeat whole series and try to beat your number of reps from the first round

5 min. cool down

Good Monday Morning!

Round Two of Hyper Wear vs. Stronger Grip involves shoulder mobility. I’m using a 20 lb Loadable Swinging Mace from Stronger Grip and a 20 lb SteelBell from Hyper Wear. And it goes without saying that I’ve got on the form-fitting, award-winning Hyper Vest PRO from Hyper Wear!

The Swinging Mace is a fantastic piece of training equipment; however, I would recommend building up to the exercise if you are a beginner to fitness. The SteelBell offers a similar training demand with a shorter lever and is a safer option, but I would say places an even more challenging demand on your grip. Enjoy the exercise and check in next week for the final round of SG vs HW!!!
