In this week’s Hyper Training Lab video, Diane shares training floor examples for more advanced athletes. This could mean these athletes have spent extensive, dedicated time in a planned multi-phase program, or that the athlete has a higher training age in experience. Either way, this super-set increases over all intensity because it combines strength and the immediate transfer to power/speed endurance movements.

Super-set Example #1

Pull-ups

Full body slam with SandBell

Super-set Example #2

Side lunge with dumbbell

Skaters with SandBell reach

Both of these super-sets can be executed with repetition ranges that apply to strength and power endurance by using lower resistance and higher volume. They can also focus on higher intensity/lower repetition ranges with less volume to target the true complex super-set that translates to higher power in performance.

Whether you’re a football player, or an in-preseason women’s basketball athlete, these are examples of how to really target the increasing need for strength and power in your program.

Here at Hyper Wear, we love our products and want everyone to use them, enjoy them and maintain healthy lifestyles with them! Today, we want to take a moment to relay to you how fun, functional, safe and truly effective the Hyper Vest PRO is. Sure, we could go on with great adjectives to describe why you should train with our vest, but we thought it’d be a better idea to let some testimonials and research do the talking.

An article on Livestrong.com, “Benefits of a Weight Vest,” by Andy Chasse discusses how and why weight vests are so effective, and provides some research to back it up. For example, a study conducted at Texas Tech University consisting of two groups of athletes, one training with and one training without a weight vest, revealed that after six weeks both groups improved in various tactical areas, but the one training with the vest improved substantially more.

Weight vests are a great tool to amp up workouts and challenge muscles so they don’t get used to repetitive movements. When you’re pressed for time and can’t come up with new exercises to keep the body guessing, just throw on a vest.

“This unconventional exercise method allows us to throw our systems off whenever necessary,” says Chasse.

Still not convinced? Well then consider the findings of another study in Chasse’s article—a study published in the “European Journal of Applied Physiology” found that of 12 distance athletes, the group running with a weight vest “emerged victorious with improvements in both their VO2 max (a measure of the body’s ability to consume oxygen) and lactate threshold (the exercise intensity at which lactate begins to accumulate in the blood), two crucial factors affecting endurance exercise.”

US Olympic Decathlete, Trey Hardee trained with the Hyper Vest PRO prior to his 2009 season. In a testimonial to Hyper Wear, Hardee had the following to say about the Hyper Vest PRO.

“I have never seen or used a weight vest like the Hyper Vest PRO. It stays tight, comfortable and cool on my body enabling me to increase my bodyweight while training. It makes adding resistance to my workouts effortless…”

So believe the hype! The Hyper Vest PRO is the real deal when it comes to seeing results and improvement. Visit hyperwear.com to purchase your own vest and see why so many people are boasting the great benefits weight vest training has to offer!

I took a phone call from a customer today. He is a firefighter and had some questions about our Hyper Vest. First, I told him that a good friend of ours is a firefighter and he swears by his Hyper Vest. Our friend, Brian, wears 10-15 pounds around all day for everything from working out to hanging out to washing the fire engine to cooking lunch. When the call comes for a fire, he takes off the vest and puts his gear on. Now, because his muscles have been trained to carry 10-15 pounds of excess weight, his 40 pounds of gear feels more like 25 pounds. In addition, because he wears his vest cinched down pretty tight during the day, he is training his lungs to work harder, which means he has greater oxygen efficiency when actually in a fire. Lighter-feeling gear + greater oxygen efficiency = a firefighter with even better ability to save me when it counts.

My new firefighter friend was pleased.

I asked how he heard about us and he told me that when he Googled “best weighted vest” a website called “Bestcovery” came up. Their tagline is “Discover the Best of Everything.” On the website, we are listed as the best weight vest out there! We’re so honored, thankful, and humbled to receive this title from this website. We really do work hard to make it the best and hope you think it is, too. Check out the website and see what other cool stuff they recommend!

Key Points – Squatting in the split stance position is great for single leg strengthening and taking your overall leg strength and stability to a greater level instead of always doing a traditional base-stance squat.

Enjoy!

We’ve reached the final week with CATZ Founder, Jim Liston, putting CATZ Austin Coach, Blake Gould, through the paces of the foundational movements of strength training. With the final progressions being introduced, Jim throws out some heavy hitters to finish the workout in Orlando, FL.

Look out for the SandBell Toss and Chase, Lateral Lunges, Plank Madness, and some great Single Leg Stabilization Exercises. Can Blake keep up with the best that CATZ and Hyper Wear have to offer? You’re about to find out…

Round Two!! Get ready for some more Jim and Blake in Florida!

Competitive Athlete Training Zone Founder, Jim Liston, takes CATZ Austin Coach Blake Gould through another series in the foundations of training here at CATZ. To ensure a great training session, you always want to include a push, pull, squat, split squat, and single leg exercise. Once again, Jim comes up with a creative way to use SandBells in this simple, but challenging workout.

This week I challenge you to follow along at home, so grab your SandBell and get started!!!!

So, CATZ President and Founder, Jim Liston, is known for devising workouts that can kick your butt. Last week we saw the warm, but the warm up is officially OVER!!

This week Jim shows Coach Blake a few pointers on training all planes of the body at once, while challenging balance. He moves from basic square stance exercises to split and eventually single leg only. Let’s see how Blake handles the workout this week!

What a special guest we have to start a new series of MMM this year! Jim Liston, founder of the Competitive Athlete Training Zone, has joined us out at the American Football Coaches Association Conference, in Orlando, Florida. Along with Jim is our own CATZ Austin Coach, Blake Gould.

This week they are showing us a little warm up series with the SandBell. This warm up is ideal before any type of exercise, whether it be weight training, plyometrics, or even running. One of Jim’s philosophies of training is to always cover 5 keys of training: exercises that cover square stance, split stance, single leg stance, a push, and a pull. Cover these and you’re in for a great workout no matter who you are!

Enjoy!!!

Good Monday Morning!!

We are going to start off 2010 with an oldie but goodie in the Hyper Wear list of fun activities. We take a game of catch and add a little challenge. First, we all stand on one leg as we toss the SandBell from person to person. We call out the person’s name before we throw it and try to toss it so they have to reach for it, challenging their balance, stability and strength. Longer reaches also add a dynamic stretch into the mix. To make it more challenging, stand on a SandBell as you toss the other set around. If you want to make it really tough, add more SandBells into the mix.

Enjoy!

They joined with Dallas Cowboys Safety, Ken Hamlin, to inspire the children of H.S. Thompson to stay active. A couple of folks from the Hyper Wear gang were also on hand to run the kids through some fun SandBell exercises.
The final week of our Female Athlete Series with Diane Vives is here, and we thought we’d end with one of the, if not the, most popular sports for young females to play: volleyball.

This week, Diane brings us a few basic exercises on how to improve an athlete’s passing technique through a lateral lunge exercise designed to stress the muscles but not the joints and ligaments. As always, if your focus is injury prevention through the exercises we’ve brought to you the past 4 weeks, make sure the correct technique and speed is used during the exercise. If not done correctly, the issues a female athlete may have in the hip, knee, or ankle may simply be compounded instead of treated through these exercises.

Next up in our series related to the female athlete, we are tackling shoulder stability.

Gone are the days of military press and open-chain shoulder raises as the way to create a strong shoulder.

Although there are lots of injuries that take place in sports due to non-contact, open-chain activities (such as repetitive spiking of a volleyball and meter after meter of a certain swimming strokes), several injuries occur from contact with another athlete or the ground. Therefore, performing closed-chain shoulder stability exercises creates a well-rounded shoulder that is used to taking force at all angles and is more efficient at staying in its girdle during activity. Weight machines with a fixed range of motion don’t do the trick, as movement in sport requires a strong, stable shoulder in all planes of motion and at extreme angles.

Try giving these exercises a shot and take the time to feel the difference of an open-chain exercise versus a closed-chain. Enjoy!
