Hyperwear training for rock climbers

January 16th, 2012

Looking to strengthen muscles and increase stamina when scaling a mountain, inside or out? Amp up the intensity of climbing and cross training with Hyperwear training gear so you can increase gripping ability, full-body strength and flexibility.

Generally, a typical route at a comp takes four minutes or so—are you able to static-hang for that long? Most likely, no. Increasing a climber’s grip and forearm strength is the best way to improve climbing ability at any level. The SandBell® and SteelBell® are the most efficient and effective training tools to increase forearm, grip and shoulder strength, as well as for total body conditioning.

Constructed from stretchy, durable neoprene bags and filled with sand or steel shot, the active movement of sand and steel challenge grip ability and work multiple arm and grip muscles. Exercises that require the user to grip into the bag will engage, work and strengthen gripping and arm muscles, as well as challenge the muscle groups activated during regular exercise execution.

For an intense grip, forearm and core challenge take the Sand or SteelBell and stand in an athletic position, grip the outside of the bell with both hands, extend arms to shoulder height and move the bell in quick, shorts bursts left and right. Climbers can also improve dead point and smoothness with Sand and SteelBell exercises. To strengthen shoulders and grip muscles, replace dumbbells with SandBells when doing any type of arm raise or shoulder press. Gripping into the meat of the SandBell engages hand and grip muscles that are not activated with traditional dumbbells or kettlebells.

Weight vest training in the Hyper Vest® PRO gives climbers the ability to add resistance during any type of training or exercise, whether in the gym or during real-time practice. The patented control design of the weight vest secures weights snugly to the core, and eliminates uncomfortable rubbing, slipping and shifting. Whether upside down, right side up, in the gym or on the mountain, the Hyper Vest PRO is the perfect resistance training weight vest to increase strength, cardio stamina and climbing agility.

For climbers, substantial upper body strength is also essential. When cross-training, take pull-ups to another level by wearing the Hyper Vest PRO. Adding weighted resistance increases the complexity and muscle requirements of every exercise; enabling you to get the most out of each movement. What’s more, climbers need strong obliques to control twisting and body tension. To work the internal and external obliques, wear the weight vest during hanging side crunches and twists to challenge and strengthen muscles even more.

“The vest is fantastic for climbers — absolutely brilliant!”- Pamela Shanti Pack, member of the Sierra Salve, awarded the Golden Piton Award in 2009 by Climbing Magazine, and featured climber in Reel Rock

Hyperwear CEO to run Bandera 50k

January 6th, 2012

Ultra marthons: ultra-intense, ultra-long and ultra-awesome…to some people that is. One of those being Hyperwear CEO, Denver Fredenburg, an ultra-endurance mad man having run six ultra marathons, one being his first 100 miler last summer.

Tomorrow, January 7th, Fredenburg will be running in his seventh ultra, the Bandera 50k. Notorious for its climbing hills, the Bandera Ultra describes itself as being “a trail run of rugged and brutal beauty where everything cuts, stings or bites.” Ready to sign up yet?

These races aren’t suited for your average runner or gym-goer. For a taste of what it takes to train for one of these, take a look at what Fredenburg has to say about his training regimen:

I have found that in training for ultras, in addition to trading sleep for training runs on almost a daily basis, all you have to do is prepare for more pain than you have ever felt and more mental anguish than you thought possible….after that, it is easy.

But don’t let that deter you! What ultras take away from your sanity, they make up for in an incredible sense of personal achievement and self-fulfillment. And let’s face it, once you’ve trained, raced and survived an ultra marathon, is there really anything you can’t conquer??

To top everything off, Fredenburg has given himself a leg up on the competition by training in the Hyper Vest PRO weight vest and cross-training with SandBells and SteelBells.

And with that, good luck tomorrow and cheers to you Denver, we’re all rooting for you and know you’ll leave everyone eating your dust!

PS: For those wondering what Denver has in store after Bandera, he’ll begin training for his second 100 miler, the Rocky Raccoon, on February 4th. So, stay tuned for more of Denver’s race and training updates in the weeks to come!

Train Heavy. But Not Too Heavy.

December 9th, 2011

Chris Remington here and it’s time for my weekly blog update. This week focuses specifically on the Hyper Vest PRO.

As the Customer Service Manager for Hyperwear, I spend my day fielding calls from customers, trainers, industry professionals etc. A large portion of calls I receive are concerning the Hyper Vest PRO. Recently, I have noticed a trend amongst the folks who consider themselves more hardcore than your average fitness enthusiast: over-loading.

It seems to me that people underestimate the resistance that the Hyper Vest PRO provides. Just adding 10 lbs. during a regular workout can be daunting, as such take it from me–train heavy, but not too heavy.

The vest is designed to work with your body, not against it, and when it comes to weights, more often than not less is more. I train with only 5 lbs. and it’s plenty! We recommend only using 10 percent of your body weight, and trust me it’s plenty. Give it a try at 10 lbs. before you add more weight.

As always, feel free to give us a call and ask before you purchase so you can make sure to get the correct size and weight. We want our customers to get the proper fit and weight, that’s what we’re here for! So go out there and train hard–safely!

Hyperwear Ambassador competing in Austin Distance Challenge!

December 7th, 2011

In being a health and fitness company, we love when our friends, family, customers, employees and affiliates get involved with or compete in any sort of fitness activity. That being said, we’re so excited to promote Hyperwear Ambassador and Master Trainer, Lateef Johnson, as he takes on the Austin Distance Challenge!!

Lateef is one hard core, results-oriented, incredibly fun personal trainer that Hyperwear has the great opportunity to work with! Currently a personal trainer at LifeTime, Lateef has also been featured in many of our Hyper Training Lab videos, DVDs, FIT MOB workouts and many other Hyperwear activities.

A huge advocate of the SandBells and Hyper Vest PRO, Lateef says that training with the Hyper Vest Pro is making him stronger and faster. For more on training and the Austin Distance Challenge, see below for some personal insight straight from the trainer himself.

“So I’m doing the Austin Distance challenge. Running is not my strongest exercise. I’ve been working with my Hyper Vest Pro to increase my strength and increase intensity for my runs.

The Decker Challenge was my first 1/2 Marathon, three years ago. Since then, I’ve done three other half marathons, and I’ve finished two marathons. Finished is the best I can say because both marathons didn’t go according to plan having to walk a lot for both of them.

The remaining event for the Austin distance challenge are Decker Half, 3M Half and the Austin Marathon.”

As the days until the Decker Challenge (this coming Sunday) get closer and closer, we want to congratulate Lateef on his commitment to training and finishing out the Austin Distance Challenge strong.

Good luck on Sunday, Lateef! Everyone at Hyperwear is cheering you on, and we can’t wait to see you cross the finish line, a blazing flash of fire, decked out in your Hyper Vest PRO!

Monday Morning Scoop: Increase activity to decrease cancer risk

November 28th, 2011

We all know that exercising has a myriad of benefits, and with the increasing list of cancer-causing-substances it’s nice to know that something we should be doing everyday can also decrease our risk for cancer. An article released by the Washington Post reveals a research study that found inactivity to be a cancer causing source.

According to research conducted by the American Institute for Cancer Research, approximately 100,000 new cases of breast and colon cancer each year can be associated with inactivity.

“…even short periods of light activity — frequently standing up and walking for as little as a minute at time — reduced risk for such biomarkers as large waist circumference, elevated triglyceride levels and increased insulin resistance, which are linked to heightened cardiovascular disease but might also boost cancer risk,” as stated in the Washington Post’s article, “Inactivity boosts cancer risk, research finds.”

The upside to this research finding is the fact that we can be actively in control of ensuring that lack of exercise is not something that is going to cause cancer in our bodies!

Doing something active everyday does not always have to be a huge production of a workout. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking around your office while on a conference call instead of sitting, parking further away from the grocery store–these are all little things you can do to make your day a more active one.

Additionally, to get more bang for your buck when you’re in the gym, try wearing a Hyper Vest PRO. The added weight means you’ll burn more calories and challenge your body with every move and exercise. If you don’t have time to make it to the gym, do a SandBell circuit in your living room!

It’s easy to add in exercising, especially with functional workout products, like the SandBell and Hyper Vest PRO that enable you to get in a great workout anytime, anywhere. For more information on our products, and to get your own at an awesome 20% off discount, CLICK HERE!

Monday Morning Scoop: Surviving the Holidays 101

November 21st, 2011

For some, the holiday season means putting back on that inevitable 5 or 10 pounds, making a habit of snoozing through the gym and going back to the kitchen for thirds and fourths. Don’t fall victim to the winter weight gain woes!

Enjoy your favorite holiday foods, spend extra time with family and friends and get comfortable in those cozy, fuzzy pants, BUT follow these rules to keep from letting it all catch up to your waistline.

Before chowing down on Thursday’s Thanksgiving feast, make sure you’re fully hydrated. Most of the time when we feel like we’re “starving” with hunger, our bodies are really craving some H2O. If you sit down at the dinner table, with a stomach partially full of water, you’re almost guaranteed to eat less and feel more satisfied.

Portion control, portion control, portion control! This is definitely easier said than done, but it’s the most important key to healthy holiday eating. THINK about what you’re putting into your mouth. Is it really worth it to have three pieces of pie? Go on, indulge on Thanksgiving, but do so thoughtfully. Take normal portions of your favorite foods, breathe and talk between bites, and enjoy your food. The longer you take to eat, the more time your brain has to register when your stomach is full, stuffed or at button-busting capacity.

Lastly, make exercising a family ordeal. If you know you’re probably not going to exercise as often as you normally do, then suggest to your family to go for a walk the Thanksgiving meal, play a game of pick-up football, or introduce them to some fun SandBell exercises.

Also, to get more bang for your buck in the gym, wearing a weighted vest, like the Hyper Vest PRO, helps to burn more calories when doing the same exercises. So, enjoy the holidays, family and food. But do so consciously! Think about what and how much you’re eating, and make an effort to keep up your normal exercise routine.

Happy holidays!

Monday Morning Scoop: Why strength training is a workout for everyone

November 14th, 2011

It’s pretty well established that exercising and eating a balanced diet are components of a healthy lifestyle that everyone should follow. To really get the most out of your workouts and improve your physical performance and appearance, strength training is something that everyone should also be incorporating.

For some, strength training is associated with body building and lifting weights to pack on the pounds. What we all may not realize is that strength training is designed to strengthen muscles, which doesn’t necessarily mean bulking up.

Strength training does more than strengthen and tone the body, it also helps to prevent injuries when performing daily tasks–walking up and down stairs, lifting heavy objects, etc. According to the online article “Strength training’s not just for body builders anymore,” it even helps to reduce the risk factors of some diseases, such as osteoporosis, heart disease and diabetes.

“You can improve your overall health just by watching your weight and taking walks in the neighborhood. But if you want to improve your fitness — look better, maximize health, have more energy, prevent injuries — you need to do more,” said Jeffrey Potteiger, dean of graduate studies at Grand Valley State University who has spent 24 years doing research on strength training, in the aforementioned online article.

A great and easy way to incorporate strength training techniques is by throwing on a Hyper Vest PRO. The Hyper Vest PRO weight vest adds resistance to whatever you’re doing, working out, running, biking, rock-climbing, you get the picture. The weight vest evenly distributes weight across your core, and its patented design ensures you can do any exercise in the vest without enduring uncomfortable rubbing or chaffing.

The SandBell is another awesome strength training tool. The active resistance of the sand inside the bell is great for working grip and arm strength, and the active movement of the sand challenges core stability.

Incorporating strength training into your daily workout is easier than ever with Hyperwear! Also, you can be sure to never run out of circuit and exercise ideas with our weekly Hyper Training Lab videos by Hyperwear Director of Training and Education, Diane Vives MS, CSCS.

November 3rd, 2011

Now that Halloween is over and the costumes are put away, you’re probably starting to stress about how you’re going to recover from that bottomless candy bowl taunting you on the counter. Well, no need to fret! Take a look at the caloric damage you’ve done, accept it, and then see what exercises you can do to burn that Reese’s off your bottom.

One easy way to kick start calorie burning without changing your workout routine is to simply throw on a Hyper Vest PRO weight vest.

Another great way to get more bang for your caloric buck is with circuit training. According to Harvard Health Publications, on average a 155 pound person will burn 298 calories after 30 minutes of circuit training, and a 185 pound person will burn 355 calories.
