Muscle Beach vs. Functional Fitness – MMM #25

September 28th, 2009

Good Monday Morning!

So recently I visited the great state of California, and more specifically, HOPSports and its fantastic owner, Tom Root. The mission for this trip was to create a SandBellâ„¢ exercise video that HOPSports could use to help spread the good word of all things SandBell to their audience of school districts all over the country. This was a big step for Hyper Wear and I was very very happy to be a part of it.

Cosmo and I headed out from Austin late Monday afternoon and after two successful flights we ended up at LAX safely. We headed straight for Venice Beach – in particular, “Muscle Beach” – in hopes of doing a little SandBell demo workout, but to no avail since it was past sundown by the time we arrived. But we decided to shoot a little intro video in the midst of Muscle Beach anyway. We spoke about how things had changed from the conception of “weight training” in the early 80’s. At that time, everything was heavy, isolated, fixed range-of-motion training. Whereas now we have redefined our goals and are more focused on how to get all the potential out of an athlete or a regular Joe/Jane.

Bright and early the next morning, we were on our way to HOPSports in Santa Clarita, about 30 minutes north of L.A. Tom has a great training facility that anyone from any walk of life would feel welcome training in. The latest draw in his business has been the creation of “Internet training” as I liked to call it. He has a HUGE green screen area to shoot videos for people in all worlds, such as exercise, schools, and more artsy things such as dance and acting. Shooting video for TEN hours was a fun and challenging task; the soreness that I felt later that night and for the next 48 hours surprised me quite a bit. I guess you can’t really talk about it unless you’ve actually done that type of training. I went into it saying “Oh, I’ll be fine, I’m in great shape” and although the director and the cameramen thought I did great, I was still mentally and physically exhausted by the time Cale (lead camera) shouted “That’s a wrap!!” Side note: Hearing that phrase was pretty cool even though I tried not to show it. Act like you’ve been there right?

All in all, it was a great experience and a great learning environment to see how these types of things come to fruition. I was very glad to be on the flight home and was welcomed home by our fellow Hyper Wear staff with high fives and hugs. Job well done Hyper Team!!! Enjoy some clips of our California Adventure:

Playground Shoulder Chaos Part 2 – MMM #24

September 21st, 2009

The final showdown at Hyper Wear’s favorite playground at Brushy Creek…This was such a fun little series to do. I definitely give credit to Cosmo for coming up with the original idea. However, as you watch the video, just realize that as we were shooting it, I went off on an exercise tangent and ad-libbed like crazy with the slamming of the SandBell. Some things just make sense and should happen. Don’t you agree?

Enjoy!!

HyperWear in Muscle & Fitness…again

What is a SandBell? Hyper Wear’s SandBell is a cross between a sandbag, a dumbbell, a barbell, a grip bag, a medicine ball, a slam ball, and a kettlebell. Made of tough stretchy neoprene, the SandBell is the most versatile and enjoyable functional weight training tool on the market. Sizes range from 2lb to 50lb. Even more amazing is that the SandBell utilizes a patent pending fill mechanism that allows the end user to fill or empty the SandBell with whatever fill material desired.

Since Hyper Wear has introduced the SandBell, there have been nothing but great things said about the product.  It’s opened the doors to a new form of fitness training.  One of the people who have seen how eye opening this product can be is Jeff “Mad Dog” Madden, associate director for strength and conditioning at the University of Texas.  Muscle and Fitness interviewed “Mad Dog” and asked him how he uses the SandBells in his training.  Here is a tidbit of the interview:

Q: How do SandBells factor into your training?
A: You can use them every way you can use a medicine ball, but because they’re free form, the shifting weight really works on grip strength and wrist torque. And they’re really good for forearm development. We’ve got them from 5 pounds up to 100 pounds.

Q: How do they compare to medicine balls?
A: I’ve been a strength and conditioning coach for 27 years, so SandBells were a great change for us, something a little different for the athletes. One advantage is that we can use them in all kinds of weather. Leather medicine balls get sloppy and seams starting tearing when they get wet, and rubber balls get slippery.

Monkey Business – MMM #23

September 14th, 2009

Good Monday Morning!

Playground Series……..Round 3. Let’s go with some fun work on the shoulders and also see how good our hand eye coordination is at the same time.

I came up with an interesting twist on how to use monkey bars in conjunction with the SandBell™.  Let me tell you, by the 3rd round through the bars, I was definitely feeling the burn!! This series of exercises would be a great substitute for a simple shoulder press or even a shoulder raise series in the gym.

Enjoy!!
