1 Minute Beach Chest Workout – MMM #12

June 29th, 2009

Good Monday Morning Hyper World!
The next installment of our summer workouts on the beach, guys and gals, is focusing on The Pecs!

Yes, that’s right, for us guys there is not a more worked out part of the body to build our self esteem than the chest.  So while we were in South Padre, I came up with a couple of exercises that helped pump me up each morning.  Remember, although there are tons of exercises for the chest, I’m trying to come up with some quick and fun things to do with minimal amounts of equipment like say……………..a Sandbell!!

This was a really fun video to make so I hope you all enjoy!

Brain Boosting Beach Run – MMM #11

June 22nd, 2009

Good Monday Morning!

Recently we went down to South Padre Island, TX, for the SEAHPERD Conference (Secondary and Elementary Administrators Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance).  I got the chance to present a talk on functional fitness using the SandBells.

While there, we shot a bunch of exercise videos using the SandBells that you’ll get to see throughout the summer.  The first one in store for today is running with SandBells.

Basically, I like a lot of variety in my workouts, so for me, a long run isn’t always the most exciting thing.  To spice things up for myself and for you, take a look at this different spin on it.  You can go out with a running partner and use a SandBell to work on awareness and proprioception since you won’t be able to focus on every running step as you’ll have to pay attention to the SandBell tossing.

Hope you enjoy watching me run Lauren Sparrow ragged all over the beach becuase of my inaccurate SandBell tosses!

Let me hear your feedback and tell me how you liked the video:

Bill vs. Batman – Monday Morning Muscle #10

June 15th, 2009

Good morning!!

Today we are taking a closer look at one of the hottest buzz words to hit the training world in a loooooong time: functional training. To me, functional training is doing something with a purpose – in other words, “Does doing this exercise benefit me in a specific way or does it just throw a dart at a board with the lights turned out?”

In today’s video I have a little fun with the movie “Batman Begins,” which I just recently saw for the first time (I know I’m a little behind the times on that one haha) and thoroughly enjoyed.  But a couple of related scenes made me think about the true function of an exercise versus using its so called “benefits” in real life a la Bruce Wayne vs. Batman. Enjoy!!

NBA Muscle Hustle! – MMM #9

June 15th, 2009

Good morning! This week, with the NBA Playoffs coming to a close soon, I wanted to look into one more series of exercises ideal for basketball players.

Everyone’s heard of the phrase “Defense wins championships,” right? Well, in my mind, the other thing that wins championships is out-hustling your opponent to the ball. And there is nothing more down and dirty and overall athletic than battling for a loose ball on the basketball court. Players using their instincts and sheer athletic ability to crash into other players for the sake of the “rock” shows extreme passion for the game and a will to win…

Enjoy the exercise of the week!!

Eyes on the Bell (part 3) – MMM #8

June 8th, 2009

Hey there!

To finalize our series of basketball drills, let’s take a look at how to not simply work on how fast or how strong the athlete is, but also to check how stable your athlete is on the court. Being able to run fast uninterrupted and do a large amount of push-ups and squats means nothing on the court if you can’t hold your ground against a bigger athlete who is imposing his/her weight on you.

To help me out today, I’ve enlisted the help of a BOSU, a great piece of stabilization equipment, along with my favorite piece of equipment of all time…..the SandBell!!

Trust me guys and gals, this one is not as easy as I made it look! I was secretly struggling big time!!! Enjoy!

Eyes on the Bell (part 2) – MMM #7

June 1st, 2009

Hello All!!

Last week we worked on tracking down a ball and securing it into our possession.  This week it’s time to advance that series and add some multi-directional, first-step quickness into it.

I’m a big proponent of getting my athletes to use their brains during a workout, so you’ll see how I take a reactive speed drill to a whole different level in such a simple way for all levels of athletes.

Remember, these drills don’t have to be progressed as fast as I’m showing you on the video.  Make sure that your athletes demonstrate proper control, technique, and understanding of the basic drill before throwing chaos into the mix!
